Starting from 2005, a smudged «restoration» had pretty much erased details, one of the most egregious examples of this trend. The 1995 CAV Laserdisc was a better option, but even the VHS was an improvement to my eye.
Fortunately, a 4K UHD restoration released in 2023 reversed this trend, becoming for now the definitive version and setting a gold standard that all others should aspire to.
